These proceedings contain a discussion of the question whether, and in what cases, ciclosporin, wich is already firmly established in the field of trans-plantation, might be the means to therapeutic progress in autoimmunr disease.
Most of the contributions published here present preliminary results which are not always identical in clinical terms, and in sum pose new questions and offer no conclusive answers. We shall see more clearly only when the current long-term multicentre double-blind placebo-controlled studies have been completed.

This volume offers, for the first time, an oveall survey of thepotential use of ciclosporin in the autoimmune field. its particular interest arises from the fact that, with ciclosporin, we have a substance at out disposal which is able selectively to modulate defined subpopulations of immunocompetent cells.
Because of this capacity it holds out the hope not only of new therapeutic aspects, but also of fresh insights into the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease, wich is still obscure in many details.
All those concerned with clinical or research aspects of immunology and in particular of the autoimmune processes will find matter for reflection and discussion in this book.
